BACKGROUND
Guglielmus (said, William) previously made his living as a hunter and craftsman in Cyrodiil where he was born. Quiet and reserved by nature, his life was uneventful until, when tracking a deer near the Red Road he shot at some movement in the bushes. His arrow found the throat of a young High Elf who had been collecting alchemical ingredients. The elf's companion immediately ran onto the road and waved down an Imperial Guard who was riding by. William, standing horrified with the bow in his hand, was imprisoned for murder.
STORY SO FAR
When William was given the Amulet of Kings by Emperor Uriel Septim on the night of his assassination, he saw it as a sign from the gods that he should take a new direction in his life. He threw himself into the fight against Dagon's forces, closing Oblivion gates at every opportunity and working with Martin Septim to defeat Dagon's champion, Mankar Camoran. He joined the Blades, the Emperor's personal guard, and inspired by the example of Martin began to find faith in worship of the Nine Divines.
In the final confrontation with Meruhnes Dagon, Emperor Martin Septim sacrificed himself to allow the manifestation of the god Akatosh in the form of a great dragon, leading to the defeat of the Daedric lord. For William this was a revelation, but also a great personal blow, as Martin had become a close friend and trusted confessor over the months of the Oblivion crisis. He moved out of his house in Bruma, a city that had been pivotal in the war against Dagon, to a more isolated cottage in the Great Forest, near Brindle Home.
Following Dagon's attempted invasion, the Church of the Nine Divines itself came under attack from the spirit of an ancient Ayleid sorceror-king who had been previously defeated by the gods and their champion, Pelinal Whitestrake. Several chapels were desecrated and their priests killed by his servants.
Given initial guidance by an old prophet, William sought out the relics of Whitestrake, and rebuilt the order of the Knights of the Nine. Using the relics he took on the guise of the Divine Crusader, and threw down Umaril the Unfeathered on both the mortal and spiritual planes, so destroying his power. Afterwards, he returned the relics to the Priory of the Nine, to stand with their armour as a memorial to the Knights who had fallen in the assault on Umaril's stronghold, Garlas Malatar.
During the battles with Dagon and Umaril, William developed his skill as a healer, and in order to use the spell-creating facilities of the Arcane University, completed his recommendation tasks at the various Mages Guildhalls. He has no ambition to rise further than Apprentice in the guild.
William currently lives in his cottage near Brindle Home, just North of Skingrad, and spends his time in hunting, crafting armour and arrows, practising alchemy and reading. Regularly he will travel down to the Priory of the Nine and spend a week there studying the religion of the Nine, with particular emphasis on Akatosh and Talos.
NOTES
I was messing about in the Facegen, creating faces for each race, and Will was the Imperial face I came up with. The others got junked, but I knew I had to send the pretty Imperial with the blue eyes out into the gameworld, so I got my fourth guy. His character quickly became apparent - self-reliant, introverted, serious, strong but above all, humble. He gets angry within himself, but doesn't have an overt temper as such, except on rare occasions and then it is focused, brief and deadly. Generally though, he is kind, gentle with the innocent and generous to the poor. I like Will a lot.
