BACKGROUND
Rethan lived most of his life in Vvardenfell. He was a killer from an early age, and particularly enjoyed slitting the throats of the defenseless while they were sleeping. His talent for stealth and love of killing led him to do some work for the Morag Tong, but he was never at home with their insistence on honour and contracts.

His House of origin is not known. His talents, and the name Rethan, suggest Hlaalu - although there is a Sethri on record as a Redoran. Others have suggested House Dres. Any of the Great Houses of Morrowind are unlikely to lay claim to him, and he himself has no interest in House matters.

With the attention of the Redoran beginning to turn to him following a spate of bloody deaths in and around Ald'rhun he caught the boat to the mainland and headed over the border into Cyrodiil, seeking the infamous Dark Brotherhood.

His second night in Cheydinhal, he was attacked by an armed thug, who had taken a middle-aged Dark Elf new to the area to be an easy source of Septims. The patrolling guard, on hearing the man scream, and finding him dead with his own knife in his chest, and Rethan with blood on his hands, arrested Rethan. So Rethan Sethri was finally caught and charged with murder on the one occasion he'd been acting in self-defense.

STORY SO FAR
While in custody, Rethan had heard a rumour that the Dark Brotherhood would contact anyone they observed committing a murder - and all are observed by the Brotherhood. After escaping from prison on the night of the Emperor's flight from the palace he took the first chance he got, a sleeping fisherman in the small settlement of Weye. Lucien Lachance invited him into the Brotherhood that night; Rethan was pleased to accept.

Rethan's interest in Necromancy is highly unusual for a Dunmer. Culturally the Dunmer despise it, as their native religion is ancestor worship, and they have banned its practice in Morrowind. A Dunmer would normally feel revulsion toward Necromancers. Rethan felt fascination.

He was first introduced to the Dark Art while fulfilling a contract for the Brotherhood. Sent to dispose of a powerful Necromancer who was in the process of becoming a Lich, he came across books he had never heard of before. He took them, read them, and found a new hobby.

It was after he had become Listener that Rethan, in pursuit of the Daedric artifact Azura's Star (a reusable soul gem), cleared out a nest of vampires in a disused mine. He forgot to take a Cure Disease potion afterwards, despite having several on his person. I believe it was a genuine mistake. Three days later he woke up with a desire for blood rather different from the one that he was used to. He has never shown any inclination to cure himself of the affliction.

NOTES
Cold, pitiless, wholly unable to relate to other living beings, he only really feels when he kills. Outwardly he is pleasant and mild-mannered, never angry, always ready to share a joke (even if some of them are a bit off-colour). Rethan is a psychopathic serial-killer. A monster. I'm rather fond of him.
